Micheál Martin: 'Much, much worse' tragedy buried under Gaza's rubble

Halt Call ' Tánaiste Micheál Said: Has To 'the A Martin World

The world has yet to witness “much, much worse buried under the rubble” in Gaza, the Tánaiste has warned.

Micheál Martin, who is travelling to the Rafah border today, has said the world must “call a halt” to a new type of war being waged, which began in Aleppo, where entire neighbourhoods are levelled.

The number of fatalities being reported in Gaza may be just the tip of the iceberg and the international community does not know the true devastation being inflicted on Palestinians, he said.

Speaking after meeting the Egyptian Foreign Minister in Cairo, Mr Martin said: “I fear we will witness much much worse in terms of loss of life and destruction.”

The Tánaiste called on Israel to provide international journalists and the political community access to the enclave.

I have no knowledge of this, but my sense is that when this war ends, and please God it will end very soon, we will see much, much worse buried under the rubble.

He added that the “world cannot go on with this type of warfare” where “you level the place — level residential houses, you level civic offices, you level universities, you level schools.”

Mr Martin said this new type of war began with Russia’s attack on Ukraine but has continued in Gaza, stating: “The world has to call a halt.” He said the indiscriminate bombing of women and children is “unconscionable".

“It is very difficult for me personally as a human being to comprehend that level of barbarity.”

Mr Martin thanked Egyptian officials for assisting in getting up to 90 Irish citizens and their dependents out of Gaza. However, he said he is “anxious” that up to 40 dependents of Irish citizens must also exit.
