Independent MEP Luke 'Ming' Flanagan has revealed that he was diagnosed with autism earlier this year.

Taking to X on World Autism Awareness Day, Mr Flanagan said he "always kinda knew".

"I was diagnosed with Autism at the beginning of February. I always kinda knew. Now I actually do know. It really helps to know," he said.

According to Mr Flanagan, his diagnosis is "like knowing my location on a sat nav".

"I always knew where I wanted to go. Now that I know my starting point, the journey is so much easier to plot," he said.

When asked whether he finds politics accessible for people with autism, he responded: "The obsession with how people look and dress definitely doesn't help."

Mr Flanagan also went on to encourage those who are curious about the condition to "start with your GP".

The Roscommon native was first elected to the European Parliament for the Midlands North West in 2014, having won a seat in the Dáil in 2011.
