A motorist has been clocked driving at 167km/h in an 80km/h zone, as more than 400 drivers have been caught speeding during National Slow Down Day today.
The garda operation aimed at tackling speeding began early on Thursday morning with drivers being urged to comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed-related collisions.
During the first 14 hours of the operation, GoSafe vans detected 423 vehicles travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit.
One motorist in Kildare was clocked driving at 167km/h in a 80km/h zone of the R148 in Kilcock.
After inspecting the car's registration plate, gardaí also discovered the motorist had no car insurance.

Elsewhere in Kildare, another motorist was caught doing 160km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N7 Castlewarden to South Kill.
Some examples of excessive speed include drivers travelling at:
- 118km/h in a 100km/h Zone on the M8 Riverstown Glanmire in Cork;
- 95km/h in a 80km/h Zone on the N25 Castleredmond Midleton in Cork;
- 78km/h in a 60km/h Zone on the Waterford Road Clonmel in Tipperary;
- 121km/h in a 100km/h Zone on the M50 Meakstown in Dublin 11, Dublin;
- 113km/h in a 100km/h Zone on the N7 Brownsbarn in Dublin 22, Dublin;
- 87km/h in a 60km/h Zone on the R750 Merrymeeting Rathnew in Wicklow;
- 123km/h in a 100km/h Zone on the N4 Greatdown The Downs in Westmeath;
- 141km/h in a 120km/h Zone on the M6 Killavally Tyrrellspass Westmeath;
- 96km/h in a 80km/h Zone on the Slane Road Drogheda Louth;
- 65km/h in a 50km/h Zone on the Pearse Road Sligo Sligo;
- 89km/h in a 50km/h Zone on the R188 Drumbear Monaghan Monaghan;
- 108km/h in a 80km/h Zone on the N2 Knockronaghan Emyvale Monaghan;
- and 139km/h in a 100km/h Zone on the N13 Lurgybrack Letterkenny Donegal.
A further update will be issued by gardaí after 7am on Friday morning.
Since January 1, 36 people have lost their lives on Irish roads.
