Aslan has announced that singer Lee Tomkins will replace Christy Dignam as the band's frontman.

Dignam, who died last June following a long battle with cancer, was the band's frontman since it formed in 1982.

In a statement on Facebook, the band announced that Tomkins would be joining them and "be singing our Aslan songs".

"After 40 years of playing with our frontman Christy, we absolutely know it's not the same and never will be but we want to continue playing our music and bringing out music to you," it read.

"This is our way of letting our memories of over four decades, live on and keeping Aslan alive within each of us and together and keeping our music alive for you all.

"We are looking forward to seeing you all again and we welcome Lee Tomkins, who will be singing our Aslan songs and has been a huge support to each of us in being able to make this happen."

The band expressed their gratitude for "the love and support" shown to them through "our difficult times and our good times."

"We truly hope we will make you proud and we are looking forward to bringing you some songs that we have never performed live before," the statement added.

Aslan will go on their Irish tour this spring, with its first gig in Cork on March 22. They will also perform in other venues in Waterford, Wexford, Limerick, Galway and Dublin.

Meanwhile, a major concert celebrating the life of Christy Dignam will take place in May this year in Vicar Street in Dublin.

The tribute event, organised by his family, will feature Irish artists performing Dignam's songs. However, the band confirmed that Aslan will not be in the lineup.
