Motorcyclist, 40s, becomes fifth person to die on Irish roads in three days

A man in his 40s has died following a single-vehicle collision involving a motorcycle in Donegal on Sunday.

The crash occurred on the R262 near Glenties shortly before 4pm this afternoon.

The motorcyclist, a man in his late 40s, received medical treatment at the scene but was pronounced dead a short time later.

The road is currently closed to traffic and local diversions are in place on the R262 between Kilraine and Frosses.

Garda forensic collision investigators have been requested to examine the scene and a report will be sent to the local coroner.

Gardaí in Glenties are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

Road users with camera footage, including dashcam, who were travelling in the area at the time are asked to make it available to gardaí.

Five deaths in three days

Five people have now died in five separate collisions since Friday night, bringing the number of deaths on Irish roads this year to 144, up 27 on last year's figure.

Earlier on Sunday, a pedestrian died after he was struck by a vehicle in the early hours on a motorway in Dundalk.

Gardaí attended the scene of the incident at around 2.45am at Junction 16 southbound on the M1 motorway. 

The man, aged in his 40s, was struck by a vehicle and was fatally injured. 

His body remains at the scene and an autopsy will take place in due course. 

The male driver, aged in his early 50s, and the three passengers, aged in their 50s and 40s, were attended to by ambulance personnel at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries. 

Gardaí in Dundalk are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

"Any road users who were travelling on the M1 this morning between 2.30am and 3am, and who may have camera footage (including dash-cam), is asked to make this available to gardaí," a spokesperson said.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Dundalk Garda Station on 042 938 8400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

Elsewhere, in Co Roscommon, a man in his early 20s died after his car overturned in the early hours of Sunday morning. 

The incident occurred at Scrine Hill, Scrine at around 2.50am.

In Co Kerry, 

a teenage pedestrian died following a collision involving a car at around 9.50pm on the R55 at Duagh Village in Listowel.

The man, in his late teens, was seriously injured and rushed to Kerry University Hospital. He later passed away. 

The female driver, in her early 20s, and the three passengers in the car, all in their later teens, were uninjured.

On Friday evening, a man who was one of the last residents of Inishbiggle Island off the Co Mayo coast, died in a road traffic incident on the island. 

Christy Henry, who was in his 60s, was pronounced dead after his car veered off the road and entered a lake on the island at around 8.30pm. 

His body has since been removed from the scene to the mortuary at Mayo University Hospital. An autopsy is due to take place.
