An Irish Examiner cartoonist has been named runner-up in a prestigious European prize recognizing courage and quality in the field of cartooning.

Harry Burton has been announced among the winners of the 2023 European Cartoon Awards (ECA).

The popular cartoonist is one of two runner-ups this year, chosen from more than 400 submissions coming in from almost 30 countries across Europe and beyond.

Mr Burton's four-cell cartoon, which appeared in the Irish Examiner on November 12, 2022, references the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27), which took place in Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt.

It shows the silhouettes of three of Egypt's famous pyramids. As the sun rises, however, the silhouettes are revealed to be the backs of three policymakers who have buried their heads in the sand.

Ben Jennings’ cartoon, published by The Economist and commenting on the treatment of migrant workers during the 2022 Qatar World Cup, was named the overall winner of the 2023 competition.

Emanuele Del Rosso, deputy director of the European Cartoon Award said this year’s winning cartoons deal with universal topics.

“Workers’ rights, the lack of willingness of the powerful to acknowledge the climate crisis, and of course the Ukraine invasion by the hand of Putin.”

“Especially the winner cartoon, by Ben Jennings, illustrates the condition of the workers that built the World Cup stadiums so strikingly, showing us both their nearness with death and impossibility of escaping the cruel game they are subject to. This image is worth a million words. "

The ECA was founded by the European Press Prize and Studio Europa Maastricht in 2019, the year in which US publication The New York Times decided to stop running editorial cartoons.

The nominees and overall winners are chosen by an international panel of cartoonists, journalists, and experts.

Mr Bruton, from Greystones in County Wicklow, was also named a runner-up of the competition in 2022 for his Roe v Wade cartoon which was published in the Irish Examiner in May 2022.
