Cosy, intimate and charming, this Meath hideaway has real feelgood factor
Hotel Review: What it's like to stay in one of the new Blue Book properties

Grand The House Station Suite At Hotel

Location

Tucked away in Kilmessan village, on the Boyne Valley Drive, this charmingly converted railway station is less than a 50 minute-drive from Dublin.

Wrapped in 12 acres of gardens and woodland, there’s a palpable sense of serenity.

Close to Dunsany Nature Reserve, Newgrange, Trim Castle, and the Hill of Tara, it is a lovely base for exploring Co Meath.

Style and design

Built as a railway station in 1862, with the last train departing in 1947, the Slattery family opened this unusual collection of buildings as a guest house in 1984.

Still active, with their daughters managing the property today, there’s real love been poured into its decor.

Country house cosy, a palette of pistachio, blush pink, and teal is balanced by discreet railway references, a smattering of Asian influence art, gorgeous wallpapers and Irish craft, keeping it fresh and fashionable.

A stylish bar, comfy restaurant, and smart terrace, make it welcoming for all seasons.

Service

Welcoming staff lend real warmth and charm to The Station House.

Friendly, sincere, helpful and with time for everyone, there’s a culture of genuine Irish hospitality that clearly comes from the top down.

Guest rooms

With just 19 individually designed rooms and suites, this is a cosy and intimate hideaway.

Rooms enjoy calm colours, original features and our quirky two-storey Signal Box suite has a pretty sitting room downstairs and rolltop slipper bath in our bedroom above.

It feels calm, cosy, and restful.

In-room perks

Cute little wooden boxes of Lyons tea, Pukka herbal teas, and Nescafé instant sachets accompany a kettle.

With hotel offerings constantly improving, the box is more exciting than the contents here.

Chocolates at turn down and a weather note are nice touches.

On the menu

The blush pink Signal Restaurant with linen cloths, cornicing and open fires is intimate and comfortable with attentive and charming service.

Portions are generous, with Sunday lunch a real draw, all hearty portions, delicious cooking and great desserts.

Bar food in the casual Platform Bar & Lounge tastes great in front of the roaring fire.

Breakfast is à la carte and includes superb baking. Eggs Benedict with mushrooms and spinach is one of my dishes of the year.

Activities and amenities

Beyond the garden there’s no spa, pool, or activities on site.

The Boyne Valley offers a wealth of riches to enjoy however, with Dunsany Castle close by car.

Our verdict: 8.5/10

Room to improve? We disliked the lack of privacy in the Signal Box Suite coming from the bathroom at night. I dislike sprung mattresses so found ours very uncomfortable although it didn’t bother my husband.

Access for guests with disabilities? Fully accessible with one adapted bedoom.

Family-friendly? Restaurant is very popular with families but accommodation feels more suited to couples or friends.

Dogs welcome? On the terrace on a lead but not overnight, unless a service dog.

EV chargers? No.

The bill? A one night B&B package with scones on arrival, a welcome drink, three-course dinner, breakfast, and a late check-out, from €290 for two sharing.
