Described as the laid-back little sister to Galgorm, The Rabbit Hotel and Retreat is a boutique hotel with real personality.
In the heart of Templepatrick village in the Antrim countryside, it’s just 20-minutes from Belfast city and a handy enough drive from Dublin.
Despite being close to the M2 motorway it is surprisingly peaceful inside, with a frisson of fun in the air.
There is an enchanting forest feel to this four-star stay which delivers lovely lake views from the rear of the property.
The cosy circus-tent themed lobby, where resident dog Florence is often found snoozing by the stove, makes for a warm welcome and a taster for what is to come.
Vibrant patterns, pops of colour and funky furniture combine to create a blend of eclectic interiors which feature throughout this 33-room hotel.
By contrast, the restaurant and bar enjoy a simpler design, leaning more into the homely atmosphere.
The addition of features like a popcorn machine in the reception add character while being careful not to distract from the overall relaxing and luxurious feel of the hotel.
From the restaurant and reception to the spa and hotel bar, staff are friendly and helpful.
Dinner service is efficient with a young waitress making the effort to chat with the table and make menu recommendations.
Cooked breakfast is a little slow to arrive, but our waiter is warm and apologetic.
One of four room types, the ‘Comfy’ — complete with an outdoor tub — delivers on relaxation and pure escapism.
Lake views and a private courtyard are welcome additions to the impeccably decorated room.
On brand, the space is fitted with quirky details, such as neon lights and a retro mini fridge — all against a backdrop of bright blue patterned wallpaper, wooden beams and industrial accents.
A modern, tidy en suite includes a large mirror and shower while the outdoor bathtub is tucked away in the private courtyard with wood burning stove. Glorious.
Fun finds aside, there are plenty of practical perks. Ballygowan water and a Nespresso machine are necessities in my book — along with what I now believe should be an essential in every hotel room — a Dyson hairdryer.
Notably, this is on display on a large dressing table, rather than tucked away in a drawer.
The mini bar area has a host of snacks in a Munchies box, though these come at a price.
Dinner at the Rabbit restaurant includes a large menu made up of elevated classic dishes such as Kleftiko lamb shank, roast duck breast and balsamic herb chicken.
With a seafood, chargrilled, pizza and salads section, the menu offers plenty of choice and each course is delicious.
The large, busy restaurant is a popular spot with locals, as is the cosy Hunter’s Bar.
The spa is the star of the show here, with its clever blend of luxury and fun.
Alongside the novelty of Ireland’s only manmade heated pebble beach you can enjoy a Swedish sauna, salt chamber and lakeside hot tubs.
However, it’s a giant glittering disco ball over the Roman bath that makes this open-air spa stand out.
Guests can even enjoy cocktails for the Tiki-themed bar as they soak — at a price of about £13.50 (approx. €15.85) per drink.
A little more shelter for the outdoor area of the lovy Comfy room would allow guests to enjoy the space even in the unpredictable Irish weather.
While a very fun space, the funky spa and extras such as the outdoor bathtub make this more of an adult-only getaway.
