Pool At House The Glashnacree

Location

As Irish settings go, Glashnacree is pretty blockbuster.

Formerly the dower house of the neighbouring Parknasilla Estate, this delectable demesne centres around an 1820’s mansion, embellished today with refurbed out-buildings and all nestled within a lush, woodland setting overlooking Kenmare Bay and the Beara Peninsula.

It’s a real life David Hockney painting.

Style and design

The property was snapped up by business partners Gregory Smith (via Buffalo, New York) and Patrick De Nagle (via Laois) in 2018, and the duo have turned two of the estate’s characterful buildings into some of the country’s most under-the-radar Airbnb rentals.

The larger Caretaker’s Cottage is a three-bedroom property, shrouded by monkey puzzles and mature rhododendrons, while I am staying in the smaller, but generously sized Coach House.

Inside, the property is a refreshing fusion of the yesteryear and contemporary — from beamed high ceilings, wood-burning stove, and cottage-half door to a stylish arc lamp illuminating a lounge with a sink-into slate sofa and art by the likes of Melanie Tomlison and local Sneem artist Jo-Anne Yelen.

Service

Owners Greg and Patrick are non-intrusive but ever-attentive hosts.

Greg furnishes me with the fascinating historic lowdown as well as a trove of local food tips while Patrick, a keen gardener, is happy to share his expertise on all matters green-fingered.

The enthusiasm is infectious as I end up sharing in their delight and passion for this exceptional acquisition.

Activities and amenities

A unique selling point at Glashnacree is the property’s stunning 40ft heated outdoor pool, which, shrouded by the lush vegetation, gives an air of the South of France to the South Kerry estate, particularly when that impressive retractable roof rolls back on sweltering summer days.

There are also ample stylish loungers and a barbecue site. While guests of both properties (that’s a max of 10 people) have access to the pool, you’re also likely to find it all to yourself.

The property’s gardens are a true horticultural haven and contain a mix of native woodland, giant rhubarb, banana trees, and 24 varieties of Australian and New Zealand tree ferns.

Tip? It’s gloriously temperate if not tropical here, so do use the bug spray provided when wandering.Having been granted access to the route, Glashnacree House is also located along the Kerry Way — which means guests can enjoy direct access to the thoroughfare and walk or bike to Sneem (4km), Kenmare (22km), or beyond.

Rooms

The Coach House features two bedrooms with the downstairs master centred around a plump four-poster bed, with a generous seating area and separate vanity space.

There are traditional features like an original fireplace, as well as quirkier touches like a flamingo bust and cabana-style pool towels.

French doors lead to a breakfast terrace with luxurious patio furniture and a contemporary fire pit.

A second loft-style bedroom also makes a charming base, while future pipeline plans for the property include the installation of solar panels and a hot tub.

In-room perks

Fresh rhododendron in the kitchen bring the outdoors in, while vegan Californian hand lotion is also provided. The kitchen is kitted with a drip coffee machine and Italian coffee beans, though milk is a BYO.

A rarity even in many hotels, but both bedrooms feature vanity tables generously stocked with wipes, cotton buds, make-up pads, and lotion.

“We used to provide welcome amenities, but found our guests didn’t typically avail of them” Greg says. “So now we’ve opted not to, to keep our rates as best value as possible.” With the properties sleeping four to six people, these rates offer rare, excellent value.

On the menu

Glashnacree House does not offer catering. However, being sandwiched between Sneem and Kenmare brings plenty of dining options.

While in Sneem, visit The Village Kitchen for home cooking or Kelly’s bakery for fresh pastries.

Kenmare offers Rookery Lane (try their tofu scramble), Boxed for wood-fire pizza, or No 35 for seasonal fine dining.

Glashnacree’s neighbouring Derryquin Farm runs a roadside honesty stand with fresh eggs, fruit, and vegetables as well as homemade jams and preserves. Perfect for brunch al fresco!
