A fair few renowned astrologers, seers and prophets have claimed to predict the future. Among the most famous of these are Nostradamus, Old Moore and Baba Vanga.
Before you decide whether you want to heed any of their warnings or predictions for 2025, maybe check out how they got on with their prophecies for 2024...
14th century plague doctor, astrologer and seer, Nostradamus was also known as the 'Prophet of Doom' so don’t go expecting rainbows and fun stuff here.
His book,
, was published in 1555 and is filled with wars, natural disasters, assassinations, nuclear attacks and revolutions.
- "The dry earth will grow more parched," he predicts in one quatrain, "and there will be great floods."
Yup, we’ve had some pretty calamitous climate events in 2024 so that was spot on.
- "Combat and naval battle. Red adversary will become pale with fear/putting the great Ocean in dread."
There have been new and continuing conflicts in several areas including Ukraine and Palestine so this could be interpreted that way.
- "King of the Isles" who has a controversial divorce "driven out by force" and who is replaced by "one who will have no mark of a king".
Could it refer to England’s King Charles and his son Harry? There was a controversial divorce for sure but that reign has continued so let’s wait and see on this one.
- "Through the death of the very old Pontiff/A Roman of good age will be elected," he writes.
There has been no change of pope in 2024 so we'll count this one as a miss... unless he got confused by forseeing the mystery thriller
and was talking about that.
Nostradamus seems to have envisioned a dire future for Europe. He mentions "cruel wars" engulfing the continent and the resurgence of an "ancient plague," worse than enemies.
- He says the "lands of Europe" will be involved in "cruel wars".
February 2022 witnessed a major escalation in eastern European tensions as Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
- "Through long war all the army exhausted, so that they do not find money for the soldiers; instead of gold or silver, they will come to coin leather, Gallic brass, and the crescent sign of the Moon."
Does ‘Gallic brass’ mean a French involvement? And does the crescent moon signify Turkey? This would definitely bring in more 'lands of Europe'. But maybe financial constraints could mean there's an end in sight to the casualties and displacement of millions of people?
- "Garden of the world near the new city, In the path of the hollow mountains: It will be seized and plunged into the Tub, Forced to drink waters poisoned by sulfur."
‘Garden of the world’ could totally mean the Amazon rainforest. The mention of being ‘plunged into the Tub’ suggests flooding and we've already had plenty deluges. And ‘sulphur’ implies volcanic activity. There has been some increased volcanic eruptions in Iceland on the Reykjanes Peninsula so maybe that's not over yet.
- "When those from the lands of Europe see England set up her throne behind Her flanks, there will be cruel wars. The ancient plague will be worse than enemies."
This sounds bad and could have implications for Ireland which geographically is at England's flanks so hopefully this one is very inaccurate.
Old Moore's Almanac has been around in various forms for 260 years. Founder, Theophilus Moore, ran a classical academy at Milltown which was then a village near Dublin (since that time, it has been incorporated into the city). A teacher of Irish, English, Greek and Latin, he became known as a clever mathematician and a wizard of astrology, gaining the nickname 'The Irish Merlin'.
- An assassination warning for Trump...
Well, now — there was that dire ear injury suffered by Trump so that sort of came true.
- The end of cash...
Cash hasn't been totally eliminated — there are definitely still a few coins down the side of couches across the country. But with cryptocurrency, and online transactions, and Revolut gaining banking ground, we'll concede that physical cash isn't the only king in town any more.
- The end of roads...
The 'end of roads' probably shouldn't be taken literally — though if you're stuck in traffic you might be wishing it could be. But if you consider the increase in popularity of remote working, drone deliveries, and greenways then maybe it's another 'beginning of an end'?
- A massive earthquake that extends across multiple borders...
There were actually fewer large-scale earthquakes around the world in 2024 compared to previous years but some of these were still significant and caused much destruction.
Though, wait, a mini-earthquake was detected in Cork in November, according to the Irish National Seismic Network (INSN). The quake, which had a magnitude of 1.6 on the Richter scale, is listed as having occurred in the Bandon area.
- Old Moore hedged his bets on Donald Trump for sure by adding him to this year's predictions as well as last year's. Apparently, there will be another attempt on Trump's life and he may not see out his term, which runs until the next election in November 2028.
- Separately, one warning could be interpreted as being about an assassination attempt on Elon Musk.
- There will be robots in our homes, according to Old Moore. This had better not just be more washing machines and dishwashers beeping at me — I want actual robots now.
- Finances feature heavily too with hard times for the US dollar predicted, good times for Bitcoin holders and a new economic union featuring the US, Canada and Mexico.
- And there may be more talk of 'white smoke'... if you know, you know.
Vangelia Gushterova was born in what was then known as Yugoslavia. When she was 12, she lost her eyesight during a storm when she was tossed into the air and thrown to the ground by a powerful gust of wind. Her family found her close to death several days later. She said she had experienced her first vision during the days she was missing. Baba Vanga (Grandmother Vanga) died at age 85 in 1996 and was known as the Nostradamus from the Balkans.
- Significant progress in the development of quantum computers that will revolutionise the field of technology.
Technology is continuously advancing at a great rate so this is pretty much accurate even if it's an easy win.
- Rising economic tension.
Most definitely accurate — on a global scale and more locally with increased living costs. And there are hacking and phishing scams galore going on too.
- She predicts a miracle cure for cancer was just months away.
Again research is constantly ongoing but there hasn't been a single cure-all for cancer announced.
- A "mighty dragon" was due to take over the planet. We'll call this one 'unclear' for now.
- One of Baba Vanga's 2025 predictions is about a large-scale war breaking out in Europe. This conflict would be so bad that it completely changes life here forever. Along with the war, higher levels of radiation are also predicted — from the weapons used maybe?
- While not specific about which countries, Vanga also predicts that religious tensions will rise in Europe, possibly leading to clashes between Christians and Muslims. She warns that Europe will go through major changes in the year ahead, experiencing conflicts on a scale not seen since World War II.
- She also made some longer term predictions about exploring Venus, the polar icecaps, and intelligent alien lifeforms so check back here next year for more on those.
One much discussed prediction for 2024 was the 'Irish unification of 2024' that was mentioned by Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation when it first aired in 1990. It had generally been seen as a quirk that was less and less likely to be accurate... until the recent which featured a 32-county parade. Will we have to add sit-com and sci-fic shows to our list of fortune tellers to watch out for?
