Some changes are coming to Cork City this festive season as the Rebel County prepares for what will now be known as “Corkmas".

Just like Santy's elves at the North Pole, those working on the ground in Cork City are busy putting the final touches on this year's Christmas decorations.

The new name for Christmas in Cork, Corkmas will bring the usual Christmas lights to the city centre as well as a brand-new immersive light experience.

While the light display at Bishop Lucey Park will not be set up this year due to construction, Cork is getting a new Christmas centrepiece called Solas.

Soon to be up and running on Emmet Place, Solas will be home to an all-new magical immersive light experience that is bound to draw a crowd and will appeal to all ages.

The new addition to Cork City’s Christmas offering will be open to the public from Saturday, November 18, heralding the beginning of the busy Christmas shopping period.

Meanwhile, the city centre’s traditional Christmas lights and Christmas trees will be turned on next week as part of Corkmas.

Fans of the big wheel will be thrilled to know that it is returning to Grand Parade and the city’s retail, hospitality and cultural sectors are all gearing up to create Cork’s unique Christmas experience.

Details of pop-up events and opportunities to interact with the light show will be revealed at a later date as Cork gets ready for the festive season.

As Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Kieran McCarthy said, Christmas in Cork always brings a strong sense of nostalgia and a time for family or friends — and this year will be no different.

“Come into Town. Meet up and catch up with old friends. Take in a different view of the city from the top of the ferris wheel. Enjoy the Christmas lights and the new Solas experience," he said.

"My call this year to Corkonians is to re-discover town, shop local and enjoy the experience."
