Knowing how best to respond to an anxious child can be difficult. A new book may help. Anxious Children in an Anxious World: Facing Fears and Finding Brave (€14.99), outlines the causes and symptoms of childhood anxiety and the self-regulation tools that children can use to calm themselves when anxiety kicks in.
It’s written by Dr Mary O’Kane, a lecturer in psychology and education.
The book is easy to read and packed with practical tips and advice for parents.
The tone is supportive throughout, whether it’s tackling the mistakes parents commonly make, explaining the critical role adults play in helping children to flourish, or describing how we can gently push our children’s limits and build their confidence in the process.

Today, April 2, is World Autism Awareness Day.
It’s a day for sharing stories and providing opportunities to increase understanding and acceptance of people with autism.
With this in mind, the Irish Rugby Football Union has partnered with the Middletown Centre for Autism to deliver bespoke training to coaches and volunteers.
The training aims to ensure that those involved in children’s rugby are aware of the needs and experiences of autistic players, so that they can support their training.
All rugby clubs in the country will be offered the opportunity to participate in five weekly online sessions. These sessions, developed in collaboration with autistic individuals, parents, coaches, and rugby players, will cover topics related to autism — such as learning styles, visual teaching methods, communication, sensory processing, anxiety management, and reframing behaviour.
