Rattan Choice Is Clean For It Garden To A Popular How Furniture Here's

Rattan furniture is a popular choice for Irish gardens and with sunny weather being forecast, you may want to spend some time sitting on yours this summer. However, if they have been languishing in all elements since last June you may need to refresh your furniture and have your outdoor area looking spick and span.

Generally, garden furniture of this type is made of natural rattan or artificial poly rattan, which are both strong and flexible materials so they are resistant to everyday wear and tear. Rattan is typically durable to temperature and humidity and can withstand heat and cold.

If your furniture is looking a bit grubby, it is easy to clean rattan before using it this season. Loosen and remove any mud or moss by rubbing at it gently with a stiff brush, making sure to reach all the cracks and gaps. You can also use a vacuum cleaner to remove loose dirt. Some spots will be a bit tricky, with smaller gaps. In these areas, use a toothbrush for hard-to-reach areas.

After brushing away the dirt, soak a sponge or cloth in soapy water. Squeeze and wipe it across the material of the furniture, repeating with clean water. If cleaning natural rattan, try not to get the furniture too wet when cleaning it. Dry the furniture with a cloth.

For artificial rattan, you can follow the same steps but you do not have to be so careful with water. You can rise off the soapy water with a hose if you would prefer and leave the furniture to dry naturally under the sun.

No matter which type of rattan you have, avoid washing it with a pressure washer. This can damage the finish of the furniture.

Being placed in full sun for long periods can cause the colour of the rattan to fade, however, so you if would like to maintain the original hue of the furniture, store them indoors for the winter months or, if storage space is an issue, consider investing in furniture covers.

Where you store your rattan furniture can also impact its condition after winter. If kept in a damp or humid area, mould and mildew can develop. If you notice it developing, pop on some gloves and mix warm water with a cup of bleach, gently scrubbing the affected area with a soft-bristled brush or a cloth. Rinse with clean water and wipe it dry with a cloth. The furniture can dry completely in the sun or in a well-ventilated area.

To prevent mould and mildew from growing, store your garden furniture in a dry, well-ventilated area and when placing it outdoors leave it in full sun on a terrace, but not on a damp grassy area.
