Many stresses pop up at the most wonderful time of the year and for many of us wrapping Christmas presents is an impossible task. For every picture-perfect present perfectly tied with a bow under the tree, there is another that looks like it was thrown in a crumpled bag and stapled together.
Of course, all that matters is the thought behind the present itself — and, if anything, a disastrously wrapped gift can lead to a funny story you’ll remember for far longer than the gift inside. However, if you are feeling self-conscious about your wrapping skills and want to impress your loved ones this Christmas with some new techniques, there are a few things you can try.
It seems an obvious choice, but YouTube is full of experts sharing artistic wrapping techniques as well as how-tos for the most basic box-shaped gifts. On YouTube, Noreva Projects’ video, 'Easy Gift Wrapping’, has over four million views and offers a creative way to wrap simply-shaped gifts in boxes with an overlapping design. Viewers highly recommend it, with one person noting: “I have always been bad at wrapping presents and nailed this on the first try.”
In a video for HGTV Handmade that is viewed almost five million times, Jenny shares tips in the video ‘How to Wrap a Present Perfectly Every Time’, promising impressive results for simple boxes and awkwardly shaped presents alike.
She shares tips on how to know how much wrapping paper you need for your present as well as how to use double-sided tape to discreetly seal the edges of the paper. She also wraps one of the most intimidating shapes — a football — so you can master tricky dimensions too. The results work, with commenters saying they return to the video every year when wrapping.
Over on TikTok, one account stands out from the crowd when it comes to wrapping presents: The Folding Lady (@thefoldinglady). Sophie Laird started her account in 2019 to share the skills she learned in a department store for folding clothes. it quickly progressed beyond the wardrobe and she also has tips for folding burritos, bedding bags and more. Her playlist, ‘ How to gift wrap’, has everything covered from basics to bottles. One genius tip is to use tissue paper instead of traditional wrapping paper for bottles so you can move it more easily around the neck of the bottle. She also shows how to make a paper bag from your gift wrap so you and pop awkwardly shaped gifts inside.
Use a box! You can pick up beautiful gift boxes in many stores, including pound shops, so you can just place your gifts inside for minimal effort. Similarly, if you’ve mastered wrapping boxes but not more challenging shapes, place them inside packaging from online orders and wrap that box instead — it’s sustainable as you’re reusing the material (bonus points for using recyclable wrapping paper or using newspaper) and it will disguise the gift if you’re hoping for a big surprise on Christmas Day.
