Lamb prices at the factories are continuing to move upwards ahead of the Christmas market, which looks like delivering a good return to producers this year.
Another 10c/kg has been added to most of the quoted prices for lambs this week amid plenty of competition between the processors to secure sufficient intake to meet their requirements.
The factory quotes for the lambs are ranging 730-740c/kg plus the quality bonus of 10-20c/kg. There are also reports of an added benefit from some of the plants where the cut-off weight has been increased.
Suppliers to the factories are reporting that, in general, 740-750c/kg is being paid this week, with some reports of 760-765c/kg for larger numbers and well-fleshed lambs to offer.
Speculation on the upcoming Christmas market has been building up among finishers over the past month, with a 'roaring' trade at the marts for stores, driving prices to top level.
That pattern has been continuing at the live sales over recent days, where all of the talk has been the soaring prices being paid for the stores.
The lamb trade at the live sales at the mart continues to return up to €135-140 over for the butchers’ lots, while the factory-type lots are making up to €125 over, and demand for the stores is showing no sign of easing back.
