A 37-acre farm near Borris, County Carlow featured on these pages in the edition September 19 was successfully sold at online public auction recently.
Gorey-based auctioneers Quinn Property hosted the online sale on October 9 – the latest in a succession of auctions from the Wexford agents.
The 37-acre farm is in the townland of Rathanna, 7km from Borris and 20km from Carlow. In advance of the auction, David Quinn said that the land was “of good quality and would be suited to a variety of agricultural uses… The lands are mainly in grass, also benefitting from wooded areas.”
The existence of a derelict farmhouse on site, meanwhile, offered another potentially valuable dimension to the property. The overall price expectation was €10,000/acre.
Lot 1 (10.2 acres) opened at €50,000 and quickly reached €100,000 (€10,000/acre). Lot 2 (19.3 acres with a derelict farmhouse) commenced at €120,000 and increased to €160,000 (€8,300/acre). Lot 3 (7.4 acres) attracted an initial bid of €40,000 before moving to €70,000 (€10k/acre).
With no higher bids for the entire, auctioneer David Quinn offered the three lots again. A series of bids brought Lot 1 to a figure of €129,000 (€12,600/acre).
Lot 3 was declared on the market, selling at €70,000. Lot 2 received further bids to €180,000 (€9,300/acre) but fell short of the reserve. It was withdrawn, selling immediately afterwards for a higher price.
In the end, it was an extremely pleasing result, David Quinn commented afterwards, “which exceeded all expectations.”
