The ICMSA represents all farmers — particularly dairy and livestock farmers — by lobbying at local, national and EU levels.
It places special emphasis on preserving the family farm structure and defending the rights and incomes of farm families.
That is the association’s heritage and a guiding principle of the organisation right through to today.
Our lobbying at EU level is progressed through our membership of the most dynamic and farmer-orientated umbrella group of farm organisations currently working within the EU: The European Milk Board (EMB).
The EMB lobbies for all milk producers in Europe and has members in 16 European countries, as well as co-operating with organisations in many additional states. The EMB represents approximately 100,000 milk producers and has already successfully launched several campaigns aimed at securing a fair milk price.
Essentially, EMB is forward-looking and operates on the basis that we must aim for sustainable milk production in every region of Europe — and by ‘sustainable’ there EMB means milk production that enables farmers to earn a decent living from their labour. The basic prerequisite — the starting point — for this admirable and achievable ambition is a milk price that covers the average milk production costs.
The President of ICMSA sits on a seven-person Executive Board of the EMB that interacts with all elements of the EU Commission and lobbies on behalf of Irish and other farmers from Member States at EU level on the regulations and Directives that directly impact farming within the EU.
