A deep-fried dish called the ‘wrappo’ is taking Cork City by storm following a viral taste test video of the unique meal.

A frenzy of excitement to taste Cork city’s first wrappo had people flocking to Ying’s Palace on the northside of the city earlier this month, with more restaurants following suit and offering their own twist on the dish.

Ying’s Palace’s ‘3-in-1’ wrappos went viral on TikTok after a taste test video posted by Christopher Lawlor had people intrigued and rushing to the restaurant to try the fried meal for themselves.

The viral taste test gives people a first look at the restaurant’s new offering which consists of chicken, rice and curry wrapped in chicken ball batter, deep fried and coated in spice bag seasoning.

Speaking to the Irish Examiner, TikTok user Christopher Lawlor said he was surprised at the attention his videos have received over the last two weeks.

“I just started [TikTok] and started throwing up videos because it’s actually something I’ve always wanted to do and so I said I’d finally do it,” he said.

“I had heard about the wrappos and thought ‘wow’ and I knew I wanted to get into TikTok so I thought this was the perfect opportunity.

"So, I got the wrappo and made a video and put it up and it seemed to have gone mad.

I’ve been getting a Chinese takeaway nearly every night since and throwing up a new video and people are loving them.

Christopher, who has quickly become known as ‘the wrappo fella’ on the social media platform said Ying’s Palace had sold out of wrappos each day, with over 200 wrappos gone by 10pm in the days after the video was posted.

Since then, Christopher has visited other restaurants that have added the wrappo dish to their menu, making a series of taste test videos giving his verdict on each one.

“They’re popular in Dublin and I think they do them in spring roll batter in Dublin and they do them in the chicken ball batter here so that’s the first I’ve seen that here [in Cork],” he said.

Wrappos rose in popularity in Dublin in 2022, with videos of the takeaway food quickly going viral on TikTok.
