Proving the success of the inaugural Examiner Eats Club event was no one-off, almost 50 lucky diners gathered for an exclusive event at Good Day Deli restaurant on the gorgeous grounds of the Nano Nagle Centre in Cork City.

With the debut event in Goldie having generated such a buzz, it was hardly a surprise that tickets for this second outing sold out completely within hours of going online, with tickets solely available to Irish Examiner subscribers.

Good Day Deli opened in 2017; almost immediately it became one of the city’s must-visit venues, located in a stylish glass room in the oasis of Nano Nagle Centre’s gardens, making it one of Leeside’s most popular destination dining spots.

Owned and operated by Cork woman Clare Condon and her New Zealander partner Kristin Makirere, who is of Cook Island heritage, their commitment to promoting sustainable food systems and commitment to local, natural, seasonal, and organic produce is glaringly obvious.

Billed as the Orana Examiner Eats dinner, ‘Kia Orana’ is a very special Cook Island greeting meaning “may you live long”.

Guests were greeted with a display of divine canapés featuring Cashel Blue cheese, Healy’s honeycomb, caramelised mealagulla apple, Ardsallagh goat’s cheese, GDD beetroot hummus, Macroom ricotta, Chipotle Kilbrack cherry tomatoes, and Hederman’s smoke mackerel pâté, all served up on house-made lavash and soda bread.

Starters were a choice of either Horizon Farm tenderstem broccoli and romesco or Goatsbridge trout with house labneh.

The main courses were a choice between Ballycotton hake with butterbean purée or pan-fried gnocchi with Garryhinch shiitake mushrooms.

For dessert, a dark chocolate dome followed by Bushby Berry & Hivemind paté de fruit, hazelnut milk chocolate, toasted bread rocher, and Bushby raspberry caramel. All this was washed down with natural wines from Le Caveau, the restaurant’s wine supplier.

Good Day Deli’s beautiful location has always been a huge draw but, as it is a daytime-only restaurant following the Nano Nagle Centre’s opening hours, diners were delighted to avail of the rare opportunity of an exclusive evening opening.

As the sun set on a cold yet sunny late autumn eve, the restaurant space transformed into a truly magical space glittering under the night sky.

When proceedings finally drew to an end, it was a very contented bunch indeed of well-fed diners who tripped off into the night with their bellies blissfully full.
