We’re weary, unwell, or fed up with cooking. So, how do we nourish ourselves? Plenty of pre-cooked lasagnas, spicy chicken wings, and curries can be found in supermarkets. But what about when our systems cry out for plain, recognisable food free from spices, additives, dried herbs, and fancy batters? Sometimes, all we want is retro food, meat, and two vegetables.
A friend whose wife is seriously ill recently told me how he has come to rely on his local supermarket turning out ready-cooked meals such as bacon and cabbage and roast beef and gravy. It got me thinking and curious about what’s out there. A Top 8 for meat and two veg became our theme, and we were quite impressed with what was available.
Some were better than others, and a few were low in flavour, easily solved with a dash of soy or sweet chilli sauce, peanut rayu, chutney, or a sprinkling of curry powder on top before heating.
Overall, our samples had no worrying chemical additives — some sauces were a bit gloopy, but not very.
To add further nourishment, check out the wide range of ready-made vegetables and salads on the side.
Our Top 8 scores were pretty even. Everyone’s a winner.
