The Irish renewable energy sector has faced numerous setbacks in recent years while other European countries make strides.

In this candid conversation with business journalist Cáit Caden, Statkraft Ireland VP for wind and solar development Donal O’Sullivan outlines some of the challenges the sector continues to navigate — as well as the growing number of opportunities.

“I think we’ll get to 80% of electricity coming from renewables, but not by 2030,” Mr O'Sullivan said.

It’ll probably be 2032 or 2033. And, you know what, that’s probably not the end of the world.

In this episode of The ieBusiness Podcast, in association with PwC, Mr O’Sullivan discusses the chronic planning delays impacting development, the growing and sometimes controversial relationship between renewable energy and big tech, and why the latest State auction for onshore projects casts an ominous shadow over future auctions.

“The system is now broken and there are not enough projects feeding these auctions,” he said.
