Glenmar Shellfish, a subsidiary of West Cork-based Lisavaird Food Group, has acquired Chef’s Choice Fish Company, trading as Mary’s Fish in Ballybrit, Galway for an undisclosed amount.
The acquisition solidifies Glenmar Shellfish’s expansion into the West of Ireland, with the company saying it will further strengthen its presence nationwide.
Operating for more than 40 years, Glenmar has already established a presence across Dublin, Wexford, Midleton, West Cork and now Galway. The company employs 48 people across its operations in Ireland, the UK and Italy and is supplied by 150 fishing vessels.
Following the acquisition, Mary’s Fish, a family-run business established 10 years ago, will combine with and operate under the Glenmar brand. All 15 staff members will remain employed, with Glenmar saying this will ensure a "smooth transition." Mary Kilcommins, founder of Mary’s Fish, will remain with the business managing day to day activity.
Juan Blanes, CEO of Glenmar Shellfish, said “We are excited to welcome the team from Mary’s Fish into the Glenmar family. This deal represents an important step in Glenmar’s growth, allowing us to build a stronger presence in the West of Ireland. Mary has built an excellent reputation for quality and we look forward to working with Mary and the team as we expand our operations.”
Lisavaird Co-Op, the parent company of Lisavaird Food Group, said it was pleased to support this expansion as it broadens the Lisavaird Food Group’s portfolio within the Irish food industry.
Lisavaird Co-Op established in 1925 and will celebrate its centenary next year. The group recorded a turnover of €213m in 2023, with Glenmar contributing €57m to this figure.
