Close to one million people travelled through Shannon Airport during the first six months of the year, boosted by new daily service to the US as well as an increasing number of flights to European and UK destinations.
According to the airport, overall passenger numbers increased by 8% compared to the same period last year, to 974,012.
The numbers were boosted by Delta Air Lines, which currently operates a daily service to JFK Airport in New York from Shannon Airport. It has also seen increased frequencies of flights to European destinations such as Alicante, Faro, and Lanzorate, as well as cities in the UK.
Chief executive of the Shannon Airport Group Mary Considine said it was operating 33 destinations across Europe, the UK and the US this year and “we are thrilled to be able to offer passengers increased summer frequencies to nine of our European destinations”.
Ms Considine said the airport was on track to reach two million passengers by the end of the year.
“As we build towards this, we remain committed to delivering a world-class experience for our customers, who are travelling from every corner of the country to fly Shannon,” she said.
Shannon Airport is the third largest airport in the country, behind Dublin and Cork.
Last week, the Government announced Shannon and Cork Airport were to receive a €4.2m package to support the implementation of sustainability plans.
The money is set to be used to expand the scope of sustainability projects, with a focus on the production of electricity from renewable sources such as solar PV farms.
