Over 1,200 entries encompassing some of the past year’s highs and lows and showcasing the best of Irish journalism were submitted to the AIB Press Photographer of the Year Awards this year. Awards across 10 categories recognised ‘vital work’ spanning the Dublin riots, devastating floods in East Cork, and welly throwing at the National Ploughing Championships.
Irish Times photographer, Alan Betson was named Press Photographer of the Year for his ‘huge versatility’ and strong sense of design. Mr. Betson won 1st and 2nd place in the 'News' category for his work on the Dublin riots last November, as well as a photo of a father clutching his child following the knife attack at Parnell Square that same day. He also won 1st place in 'Politics' and 'Arts and Entertainment'.
Irish Examiner photographer, Dan Linehan took home two awards at the event. Editor Tom Fitzpatrick commented on his ‘magic gift’ of being able to turn the ordinary into something extraordinary when he takes aim with his camera.
Mr. Linehan's coverage of "Road Bowling" a series of pictures of the Munster Road Bowling Championship which according to the judges brings the "key moments of this unique traditional sport" earned him 2nd place on the Reportage award.
AIB Sustainability Award - Winner
On the night, Dan received the prestigious AIB Sustainability Award for his winning entry "HAIR-RAISING DEVASTATION" which depicts Middleton's local hair salon HS2 at the aftermath of Storm Babet. The judges said the entry brought home the 'The devastating effects of flooding' .
